2FA Protection and benefits of using it

2-factor authentication (or 2FA) is the 2-step protection of your access details or any of the actions you do with a service.

As the number and sophistication of malicious attacks throughout the web are growing, some financial platforms have already made 2FA mandatory for all their users.

With Freewallet, you may enable this option on your login and export actions and on each outgoing transaction.

Here is our guide on how to do that.

To enable 2FA, simply go to ‘Security‘ -> ‘Account’ and select ‘2-factor authentication‘, then click ‘Begin Setup‘.

After successfully linking 2FA to the app, you’ll be able to choose:

This means that every time you make a transaction and/or log into your account, the app will require a unique code generated in an authenticator app.

Freewallet enables 2FA with an authenticator app on your phone. It can be Authy, FreeOTP, Google Authenticator, or any other app of your choice. Please note that once activated, 2FA will be applied to all of your Freewallet apps.

With Authy installation is possible for both desktop and mobile apps.

If you’d like to use the mobile app follow these steps:

1. Go to the AppStore or Google Play and download the app;

2. Under ‘Account Setup’ select the country code, type in the phone number and the email to receive a message or a call, and enter the registration code;

3. After successful login press the three dots in the top right corner and go to ‘Settings’;

4. Choose app protection -> enter your PIN and enable backups in the ‘Account’ to be able to recover the codes on a different device;

5. On the main screen, press +; you will be asked to scan a QR code;

You can also manually input the 2FA key to the Authy app if your scanner is not working.

6. Now when you log in to the app you will be asked to enter a validation code that’s generated on your device (mobile or desktop).

We strongly suggest that before enabling 2FA, you save the Secure 2FA key, take a screenshot of the QR code and keep them safe, preferably offline. If you ever lose your phone, storing your 2FA info will make it so much easier to restore access to your wallet.

If you want to use a desktop version, download and install Authy after choosing the correct OS.

For Google Authenticator and FreeOTP, the procedure is the same. One thing, however, is that they do not have a desktop app and you can’t transfer Google Authenticator to a new device.

Please remember that 2FA is also vulnerable data which is subject to malicious attacks.

We recommend you strengthen 2FA with other security tools, for example, by requiring multiple email confirmation on your transactions.
