What Is Shiba Inu (SHIB)?

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is an Ethereum-based token founded in 2020 by an anonymous team of developers. The spokesperson for the token uses a pseudonym Ryoshi and provides rare commentaries on the project. According to Ryoshi, Shiba Inu is his experiment in building a community-driven platform.

Soon after the launch the token became popular and gained considerable following and trading volume. At some point in 2021 Shiba Inu event outperformed Dogecoin in terms of market cap becoming the most successful meme coin. This achievement was short-lived though. Around that time it was revealed that 20% ERC-20 tokens held by crypto whales are SHIB. On top of that some retailers started to accept payments in SHIB.

The Shiba Inu token emerged on the market on August 1, 2020. In the early days the price of the token was around 9 billionth fractions of one American dollar. The token wasn’t available on highest centralized exchanges and wasn’t anything outside the supporters circle and ERC-20 tokens investors.

Things started to change drastically in the spring of 2021. The SHIB creators sent a generous donation of their token to Vitalk Buterin, who burnt most of it (by sending 90% of SHIB to a locked wallet) and spent the remaining tokens (10%) for charity. Other factors that helped to fuel the SHIB price were the mention of the token by Elon Musk on SNL and listings on major exchanges like Binance, OKX, Gate.io, etc. In May 2021 SHIB peaked at $0.000035.

Soon the price declined and until the fall it was around $0.000007–$0.000008. The fall of 2021 saw a strong crypto rally and SHIB reached its historical maximum at that period. On October 18 the price was as high as $0.000086.
